The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved an application for the prescription medication Viagra, the first drug to win approval for use in treating erectile dysfunction.
The medication is not intended to treat enlarged prostate, diabetes or high blood pressure.
The FDA said it is reviewing the application, which is being filed in the Southern District of Florida, and will include new information, including a new warning about the drug's potential interactions with other drugs.
The agency hopes to launch the application by early December and will issue a written statement after the FDA approves the drug.
Viagra, which is sold under the brand name Viagra, is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
"This approval marks the first FDA-approved treatment for erectile dysfunction that treats erectile dysfunction," FDA spokesman John R. Miller said in a statement.
Viagra is prescribed to men who have been diagnosed with the disorder, according to the FDA.
A study conducted in the first phase of the drug's development in 2002 showed that men who took Viagra for more than six months were twice as likely to be successful in achieving or maintain an erection, compared with those who used a placebo.
The study was designed to examine whether Viagra can help men with the disorder.
A 1998 study in the journal, "Journal of Sexual Medicine," which studied Viagra use in men between 18 and 64 years of age found that men with the disorder had an 84 percent increased chance of achieving an erection in a four-week period.
The FDA has asked the makers of Viagra to review the study.
"As a consumer of prescription drugs, I appreciate the effort that we've put into getting approval for Viagra," Dr. Josepha Reiss, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, told Fox News. "However, I think there's a bit of a lack of data on the impact of Viagra in the treatment of this disorder."
The FDA's approval is for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in adults and children under 18.
Reiss said she has no plans to disclose any information to the public.
"I know it's hard to believe this is an approved medication, but that's the FDA's decision," she said. "I will be contacting my physician to discuss the potential risks and benefits of this drug.
